Lavar Munroe awarded Guggenheim Fellowship 2023
We are happy to annouce that Lavar Munroe has been named a 2023 Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. 
 
Lavra Munroe has been awarded in the artistic and cultural disciplines with his fine arts fellowship underwritten by Robert De Niro in honor of the actor’s father Robert De Niro Sr., a painter and a 1968 Guggenheim Fellow. Munroe’s work centers on his upbringing in the Bahamas and investigates themes of resilience, memory, ancestry, and fantasy.
 
Munroe now lives and works in Baltimore, USA. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town; Centre Pompidou-Metz; Perez Art Museum Miami; National Gallery of Bahamas, Nassau; MAXXI Museum of Art, Rome and the Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco. Works have been included in previous exhibitions at ‘Prospect 4’ triennial, New Orleans, directed by Trevor Schoonmaker; ‘All the World’s Futures’, 56th Venice Biennale, curated by Okwui Enwezor; 12th Dakar biennale, curated by Simon Njami; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and SCAD Museum of Art among others.
